Match Day Approacheth!

Set your recorders, gents, for tomorrow the U.S. MNT takes on mighty Switzerland at at St. Jakob Park in Basel (8:30pm local time; 2:30 pm EST). What do you need to know about Switzerland? Well, in Switzerland, they had brotherly love and 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.*

Our player options:
GOALKEEPERS (4): Brad Guzan (Chivas USA), Marcus Hahnemann (Reading FC), Tally Hall (Esbjerg), Chris Seitz (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (7): Carlos Bocanegra (Fulham FC), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Dan Califf (Aalborg BK), Jay Demerit (Watford FC), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard de Liege), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock), Steve Purdy (1860 Munich) MIDFIELDERS (7): Freddy Adu (SL Benfica), DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers), Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Benny Feilhaber (Derby County), Eddie Lewis (Derby County), Danny Szetela (Racing Santander)

FORWARDS (5): Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Taylor Twellman (New England Revolution), Preston Zimmerman (Hamburger SV), Sal Zizzo (Hannover 96)

My guess at the probable lineup:
---------Dempsey----Twellman-------------
Lewis--------------------------------Beasley
-------Feilhaber-------Bradley-------------
Pearce-------------------------Cherundolo
-------Bocanegra------Onyewu------------
----------------Hahnemann----------------

* though the screenplay for The Third Man was indeed written by Graham Greene, he noted, in an intro to a printed version I read several years ago, that this semi-famous line was actually authored by Orson Welles.

I am excited to see guys like Szetela and Adu called up, and hopefully they'll get to play in the 2nd half. I'm not a huge Twellman fan, but at least he's a legit target man. I would prefer Brian Ching for that role--Twellman has consistently proven that he can score in MLS, but not an international leave...but Twellman is better than nothing

Who in the world is Robbie Findley? Is he really more deserving than some of the strikers toiling away in 2nd division European leagues? When guys like this get called up, it makes me wonder what sort of behind the scenes machinations are going on. Is this some sort of payback? Its hard to believe its based on (De)merit b/c I've never heard of him. Then again, I'm an acknowledged MLS critic and Euro-snob, so what do I know.

I'll be stuck in trial today but I'll try to catch a piece of the game...

one last Q--where's Donovan? did i miss something?

I'm thinking Adu gets some PT in the 2nd half. Not sure about Szetela, though. Though, if Freddy comes in, where do you think he plays? Deuce, were he still in at that point, would definitely have to play the target guy in such a scenario.

I'd also like to see Maurice Edu grab a few minutes (maybe as a sub for Benny or Lewis). I think this kid has a future.

As for Donovan, simple: LA has won five in a row, and still has a shot at the playoffs if they win out. Nice gesture to Yallop.

[Spekaing of Yallop, I genuinely like the guy, and think Lalas deserves most of the blame for LA's season. And it's starting to look like Yallop could stick around, which is a tad unfortunate, b/c I think he'd be a great fit for San Jose version 2.0.]
